wire mesh can be bought at almost any hardware store. as for making a cage out of the rubber maid box, there are lovely sites on the web on how to make something called bin cages. they give plenty of ventilation IF MADE PROPERLY. if the cage ever steams up, or looks humid it is not made proberly. look this up:

Wait about a week before you put him in the ball. a month waiting period isnt necessary. however, you should at least wait a couple of days before doing any handling, to make sure he is settled and not stressed. it would also help to put a little bit of sugar and liquid vitamins (sold at the pet store) in his water on the first day. the sugar is only for the first day, and the vitamins should be put in his water for the rest of his life. the sugar serves to give him energy and reduce stress, perks him up after the travel. try to keep him in a place with a constant temp, and be sure not to use pine or cedar bedding because it gives them respiratory problems. the best bedding is either aspen woodshavings, care fresh, or shredded paper.
