Why did Knut's mother reject him?

Also why did the Berlin zoo's veterinarians allow his brother born at the same time to die?

And the Panda female that died due to heart stress caused by "constipation" -- was she given less attention because the zoo's resources were focused on the baby polar bear?

if Knuts mother was also raised in captivity by a keeper, she could have rejected him simply because she hadn't learnt what to do by her own mother. This is a major problem with hand-rearing animals in zoos, it causes a wealth of problems for the animal later in its life. As for the panda - i believe that was probably the case. As cute and cuddly as knut is, Im not convinced it was the right thing to do, hand rearing him. He will grow into a fierce predator who is simply not adapted to live life in captivity. Polar bears do not do well in these environments and it is not fair on the animal to keep him in these conditions, just for our benefit. they suffer many problems and are frequently seen stereo-typing in their enclosures. they are POLAR animals, so to be kept in anything less than this environment is simply cruel.

I don't think they know why Knut was rejected, sometimes animal mothers just do that. As for his twin, I believe he sucumbed to an infection. According to the zooligists Yan Yan (the panda) had not shown any signs of discomfort, so they did not know she was ill.
