Check out a hedgehog. They're awesome pets...very clean, small, they don't make loud noises. Just be careful if you leave it in a penned area outside for recreational purposes. They are excellent diggers and will be gone before you know it.

How about a cooter? You can eat them or just keep them for companionship. They love to sit on top of logs. The only problem is that some times they smell a little fishy.

True: there are hedgehogs for re-homing in Hedgehog Hospitals. They have been injured by cars and can't manage in the wilds, so you'd be doing a good thing as well...

i suggest you get a rat they aren't expensive to feed only cost a few dollars to buy the most expensive part is the cage and they only live for 3 years...go for it

Wait!!! What's wrong with a Llama? Mine was nice so was her baby I helped deliver. A kitty, cat should do well, sooo calming and not a lot of upkeep unlike my gazillion pets, but I love em all.

(Ssshhh, pet/rescue shelter are my kind of places, just don't look at the roo's they will certianly break your heart, ssshhh).
A Chameleon. I had one once. They are really cool, changing colors and their eyes are crazy. Plus they have very long tongues and its fun to watch them eat with it. They are not that expensive and are pretty easy to take care of.
