My boyfriend heard something quite interesting the other day. Apparently, the reason pandas are becoming extinct is because they don't reproduce in the wild. I thought this sounded far fetched, but does anyone know for sure?

I have heard the same. Pandas mate so infrequently because of the limited population and their dispersal that when they meet they don't know how. In zoo's they either have to do it artificially or aid them in mating. This is an example of species not surviving even when we think they have a large enough population to make it. That is one reason wildlife people want an extra cushion before they remove and endangered species off the list.

The reason panda numbers were declining was due to loss of habitat and the fact that they are specialists. Pandas rely on bamboo and bamboo is prone to large die-offs. Typically pandas could move to new regions of fresh bamboo, but with the destruction of their habitats, they were having harder time finding new bamboo.
It is now believed that their numbers are on the rise (because yes, they know how), but they are still listed as endangered species until their numbers are strong enough to support their numbers.
Its in captivity that pandas have trouble reproducing. Pandas seem to lose interest in mating, which is why researchers have resorted to panda-porn, artificial insemination and drugs to encourage them to mate.
the pandas might not be able too.....but im sure you can
gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr... *licks lips*
